Why should I go to college?

There are so many reasons students today should attend college. Obviously, the financial benefits are overwhelming. Students who achieve at least an associate’s degree make on average $250,000 more during their working lifetime than those without a degree. Furthermore, training in a specific field can give students the competitive edge when applying for jobs in a competitive job market. Another great reason for choosing to go to college is the experience it offers. The friends you make and the impressions you make on them can enrich your quality of life and ensure your future success in whatever career field you choose. Regardless of your college goal, a short time at UACCM can lead to a much richer journey through life.

How long has UACCM been around?

In 2011, UACCM celebrates it's 50th anniversary. It all began in 1961, when the Arkansas General Assembly established Petit Jean Vo-Tech as the state’s second adult vocational-technical school. The first building was completed in July 1963 and classes began in September. In 1991, the General Assembly converted Petit Jean Vo-Tech to a degree granting two-year college, Petit Jean Technical College. In 1997, the College again made a name change to Petit Jean College. Finally, in 2001, Petit Jean College merged with the University of Arkansas System and became the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. Through all of its growth and change, UACCM has worked to maintain its focus on student learning. UACCM currently consists of 69.7 acres, ten educational buildings and various support facilities. The College annually serves approximately 3,600 students in technical, occupational, academic, adult education, and non-credit community education courses.

How do I begin the admission process?

First, you must fill out an application for admission, which you can do electronically or by submitting a hard copy. Once you have completed an application for admission, you will need to provide ACT or ACCUPLACER test scores, an official high school transcript or GED score, and your immunization records. Once the Admissions Office receives this information, you have officially begun the admissions process and have taken the first step toward an exciting and fulfilling educational journey. Filling out an application is free, so if you are considering UACCM in any way, apply as soon as possible. Your early acceptance also ensures that you will meet all deadlines for available scholarships and financial aid.

Can I afford to go to college?

Sure! With all the scholarships, grants, loans, and other financial aid currently available, it is possible for almost anyone to attend college. Approximately 70 percent of our students receive financial assistance of some kind each academic year. These types of aid, when coupled with our affordable tuition rates, ensure that continuing your education can become a reality. Additionally, students who make good grades at UACCM are often eligible to receive transfer scholarships to four-year schools throughout the state, so you will be able to afford the next step in your journey.

How do I know if I am eligible for financial aid? And how do I apply for it?

UACCM offers students a wide variety of financial aid packages. To determine your eligibility, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will help you know if you are eligible for many types of aid, including Federal Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and more. If you would like a financial aid packet mailed to you, contact the Financial Aid Office. Be sure to apply for financial aid by April for enrollment in the fall semester or by November for enrollment in the spring semester. Remember: Applying for financial aid is free!

Will my UACCM credits transfer to other schools in Arkansas?

Yes! The Arkansas Course Transfer System (ACTS) helps ensure the transferability of general education courses between Arkansas’ public colleges and universities. This makes attending an institution such as UACCM for the first two years of your degree a more affordable option than attending only a four-year university.

Can I apply for scholarships? How?

Sure! UACCM awards dozens of academic scholarships each semester based on ACT or other entrance exam scores, class rank, intended major, or high school or college GPA. If you are eligible, be sure to apply by April 1 for enrollment in the fall semester, and by November 1 for the spring semester.

How long does it take to get a degree or certificate from UACCM?

This will vary between students. Depending on your program of study, you could receive training and enter the workforce in as little as one semester. If you are receiving credits to transfer to a four-year institution, students typically attend UACCM for four semesters. The important thing is that there is an option for everyone. Whether you want to fast-track into a new career or set yourself up for furthering your education after UACCM, we can prepare you for whatever lies ahead in your journey.

What can I do with a degree from UACCM?

Almost anything! Whether you want to receive basic training to help you move quickly into an exciting new career, earn college credits which will transfer to another college, or experience personal enrichment, we have an option for you. You may enroll in a career-specific program that can place you in the workforce in one to two years; you may enroll in a college-transfer program that will give you the first two years of a bachelor's degree; or you may enroll in courses for self-improvement or fun.
